Earlier this month, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt was met with jeers when he brought up AI during his commencement speech at the University of Arizona. Just days earlier, footage of real estate executive Gloria Caulfield being booed at her commencement speech at the University of Central Florida after mentioning AI went viral online.

Japan Buddhist monk bar has heaven- and hell-inspired drinks, offers beating service

Offbeat drinking venue provides everything from calligraphy to a ‘coffin’ experience in bid to popularise Buddhist culture

A Tokyo bar run by Buddhist monks has become an online sensation for its unusual blend of cocktails, chanting and death-themed rituals.

At the Vowz Bar in the city’s Shinjuku district, patrons can sip drinks inspired by heaven and hell, seek life advice from the monk staff and listen to sutras performed in a modern musical style.

According to a Chinese visitor @kaolababyy, the menu features cocktails such as “Nirvana in the Pure Land”, “Never Ending Suffering in Hell” and “Love and Hate leading to Hell”, each priced at 1,000 yen (US$6).

The drinks combine fruits and spirits to create sweet, sour and spicy flavours, and are served with incense stick-shaped snacks.

WTF?! For years, military technologists and outside researchers have warned that the commercial data economy could put US troops in the crosshairs. Those warnings are no longer hypothetical. US Central Command now says adversaries are exploiting commercial location data to track American personnel in active war zones, confirming that the same infrastructure that powers targeted advertising is being used against deployed forces.

Polizei nutzt Standortdaten aus Handy-Apps

Deutsche Polizeibehörden setzen bei Ermittlungen mitunter auf die Dienste von Datenhändlern, wie BR-Recherchen zeigen. Das LKA Mecklenburg-Vorpommern nutzte demnach Standortdaten aus Smartphone-Apps. Experten halten das für rechtswidrig.
Wie verbringt eine verdächtige Person ihren Alltag? War sie an einem bestimmten Ort? Standortdaten aus Smartphone-Apps können diese und viele weitere Informationen preisgeben. Wer am Smartphone die Standortfunktion für Apps aktiviert, muss damit rechnen, dass diese Daten bei Händlern landen - und dass deutsche Polizeibehörden sie womöglich für Ermittlungen nutzen.

Nach Recherchen von BR und netzpolitik.org haben mindestens zwei Landeskriminalämter bereits auf Daten kommerzieller Anbieter zugegriffen. Auf Anfrage bestätigte das Landeskriminalamt Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, bei Ermittlungen Standortdaten aus der Werbeindustrie eingesetzt zu haben. Dies sei "in der Vergangenheit in geringem Umfang" der Fall gewesen.

Zum ersten Mal liegen damit Belege vor, dass eine deutsche Strafverfolgungsbehörde kommerziell gehandelte Standortdaten ausgewertet hat. Auch das LKA Brandenburg gab an, "zur Bekämpfung von unterschiedlichen Kriminalitätsphänomenen" Dienste von Datenhändlern in Anspruch zu nehmen. Ob es sich dabei ebenfalls um Standortdaten handelt, blieb auf Nachfrage offen.
